The official currency of Ukraine is the hryvnia, abbreviated UAH and represented by the symbol ₴. It is issued exclusively by the National Bank of Ukraine.
The hryvnia was introduced on 2 September 1996, replacing the temporary karbovanets at a rate of 100,000 karbovanets to 1 hryvnia.
Before the hryvnia, Ukraine used the karbovanets (also called the Ukrainian coupon), a transitional currency issued after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 to replace the Soviet ruble.
The National Bank of Ukraine, the country's central bank headquartered in Kyiv, has the sole authority to issue hryvnia banknotes and coins.
The hryvnia is divided into 100 kopiykas (kopecks), although low-value kopiyka coins have been withdrawn from circulation as inflation reduced their practical use.
Commonly circulated hryvnia banknotes include 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 hryvnia notes, with the 1,000 hryvnia note introduced in 2019.
